Recently, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, for successfully introducing the ecological control technology to cotton pest, was awarded as the “the Demonstration Base of Introducing Foreign Intellect” by the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and the valid date is until November, 2016.

The cotton control technology, the Australian cotton pest forecasting and control technology, to new invading pest, whitefly, and the applying bio-chip technology in control cotton pest were introduced by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in 2008. The technologies were applied in Xinhe county, Kuqa county and Shaya county of Aksu Prefecture in Xinjiang, and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th corps in Xinjiang Construction Corps. Total area of the technologies’ application was 66.6×104 hm2, and the benefit farmers have reached up to 150 million people. The technologies play the important roles in the pest control, the decrease of cost, and the improvement of cotton yield.

The amount of pesticide decreased 300 tons every year since the application of the technologies in Xinjiang, which accounted for nearly 4% of total amount. The decrease of pesticide significantly reduced the soil and water pollution, resulted in the decrease of toxic substances into food chain, and thus was benefit to the conservation of biological diversity and the security of human and animal.

The project team successfully predicted the outbreak of cotton bollworm in Xinjiang in 2008, which provided the important scientific evidence for the pest control. The research team's report was sent to General Office of the State Council, and Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Hui Liangyu gave the important opinion and indication on the report in 2009.
