A field observation station for ecosystem protection was jointly established by the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography and the Taxkorgan Wildlife Nature Reserve Administration in the Pamir Plateau on Mar. 30 in northwest China’s Xinjiang Province. 

The field observation station, located in the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of western Pamir Plateau, will support research activities for ecosystem protection in Pamir Plateau, water resource management, biodiversity monitoring and conservation, grassland productivity evaluation, climate change adaptation, as well as natural disaster forecast and early warning. 

Pamir Plateau bestrides China, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan with an altitude of over 4,000 meters. Pamir means "roof of the world" in local Tajik language. 

Distinctive locality of the Plateau gives it special climate conditions and natural environment. This area is endowed with  unique ecosystem and rich biodiversity due to its special natural conditions. 

However, human activities in the last century have brought great influence to the fragile ecosystem in this area. 

The establishment of the observation station will help strengthen the scientific cooperation between China and its neighboring countries and international organizations, and therefore improve the ecosystem protection and the natural resources management in Pamir.
