Achievements:
Professor Dr. Yaning CHEN is the Director of State Key Laboratory of Desert and Oasis Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is an active leading scholar and has significant contributions to climate change, water cycle and ecological remediation. His research interests focus on water resources and ecological protection in arid areas. He has presided over 40 large-scale research projects, including National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Key Knowledge Innovation Project of Chinese Academy of Sciences. As the first or the corresponding author, he has published 16 monographs and more than 300 SCI-indexed papers in prestigious journals, such as Nat. Commun., J. Geophys. Res., Geophys. Res. Lett., and J. Hydrol. He has over 19200 Google scholar citations, an h-index of 64, and an i10 index of 504.

His main academic contributions include: (1) systematically interpreted the impact of climate change on water resource formation, transformation and water cycle in the arid area of northwest China, and revealed the interaction mechanism between climate change and water system in the arid area of northwest China in terms of water production in mountainous area, water consumption in oasis and water shortage in desert area. His achievements won the Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. (2) Based on the interactions among three ecosystems, namely mountain, oasis and desert, water resources utilization and eco-hydrological processes in inland river basins of arid areas were systematically studied, which provided important scientific and technological support for water resources management and efficient utilization in arid areas. The achievements won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2008. (3) In the fields of oasis productivity improvement in the arid area and ecological security, he put forward the theoretical framework and technical mode of guaranteeing oasis agricultural ecological security, which enriched the construction connotation and operability of the desert oasis ecological security system. The achievement won the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2011.
