XIEG is a PhD and MSc degree-granting institution by the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 1983. XIEG has three first-level disciplines (Ecology, Geography, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering) and six second-level disciplines (Physical Geography, Human Geography, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems, Botany, Ecology and Geodetection and Information Technology) for doctoral degree granting respectively; ten first- and second-level disciplines (Physical Geography, Human Geography, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geodetection and Information Technology, Resources and Environment, Biology and medicine, Soil Conservation and Desertification Control) for master degree granting, and three postdoctoral research stations (Geography, Biology and Ecology). XIEG has 474 master’s and Ph.D. students, include 59 international students. There are about 100 graduate and doctoral students and 29 post doctors per year.
Key Disciplines and PhD/MSc Supervisors of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS
1. Physical Geography
Focusing on the disciplines of hydrology, wind and sand geomorphology, soil geography, quaternary environmental science, and global climate changes in arid lands. Working on hydrology and water resources, utilization of resources and ecological security, dynamics of desert ecosystems, and engineering of blown sand and sand dunes, particularly on the hydrological process, soil process, aeolian sediment and blown sand process, and ecological process, exploring the mechanisms and interactions of the physical geographical elements in the arid environment, and revealing the relationships among the mountains, oases and desert ecosystems.
