Research on the Occurrence of Air-assisted Dust Storm and the Transport Mechanism in Boundary Layer
TEXT SIZE: A A A

Cooperative Organization: Meteorological Research Institute of Japan Meteorological Agency, Institute of Physical and Chemical Research of Japan

  Project Period:2000~2005

  Main results:

The project undertakes the monitoring and analysis of wind erosion and meteorological and climate processes of dust aerosol and different underlying surfaces in Taklimakan Desert– main dust source area in Asia and provides basic data for building GCM dust model and evaluating the effect of dust on global climate environment. More than 30 technicians from China and Japan participated in the project and installed instruments such as automatic meteorological station, visibility sensor, OPC, Hi-Vol aerosol sampler, Andson sampler, lidar(laser Radar???), solar photometer and acoustic detecting device in Cele National Field Station of Desert-Oasis Ecosystem and Aksu National Field Research Station of Agro-ecosystem in the south and north of Tarim Basin, Taglak of Tianshan Mountain and Katashi of Kunlun Mountain. Major results include: (1) It is the first time to systematically observed dust aerosol and forming and transport process of dust storm in Tarim Basin, collected and analyzed nearly 2000 samples and accumulated more than 1000 megabytes of automatically collected data. (2) Obtained a comprehensive understanding of physicochemical characteristics of dust aerosol in Tarim Basin. (3) Had a better understanding of the emerging condition of dust weather and dust storm variation characteristic in recent 50 years in Tarim Basin. (4) Had a new insight into dust rising of dust storm and vertical distribution in the air in Tarim Basin. The project continues to carry out the research on local cycle of dust storm and continuous record of periodic sampling of aerosol and meteorological data presently.
