In the year of 2020, XIEG was approved to establish the Association for Combating Desertification (ACD) by Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO).
Under the framework of ANSO and in line with the purpose of “ecology, livelihood and sustainability”, the Association for Combating Desertification (ACD) gathers research capability, and scientific and technological resources in the Belt and Road region to combat desertification, develop green livelihoods, and then focus on key issues such as scientific diagnosis, information sharing, technology demonstration and capacity building, finally carry out joint efforts, build the network platform of desertification combating, scientific exchanges and technology sharing.
Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the head of the ACD, and its members include Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, CAS, Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, International Innovation Center of the Aral Sea Basin of Uzbekistan, Desert Research Center in Egypt, Pan-African of the Great Green Wall etc. The members of the ACD have jointly built the laboratories, field monitoring stations and experimental demonstration areas in central Asia and Africa. ACD has conducted the joint investigation of desertification in the Aral Sea and the Sahel region, developed key technologies such as quicksand fixation and degraded grassland restoration, and held 20 international seminars and 5 technical training courses.
ACD aims to comprehensively enhance the capacity to prevent and control desertification and conduct scientific and technological cooperation with the counties in the belt and road region.
