CAS PIFI Visiting Scholar Presented China Tianshan Award

The government of Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region held a ceremony recently to give the China Tianshan Award to Dr Osama Mohamed, from Egypt, for his contributions to Xinjiang’s science and technology sector.

The award medal and honorable certificate were presented by Manlik Sitti, deputy governor of the region’s government. During the ceremony, Dr Osama gave a speech on behalf of all the Tianshan winners.

Osama worked at the Key Laboratory of Biogeography and Bioresources in the Arid Land, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), from 2014 to 2019, with funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and CAS.  During his work in China, he has published more than 36 SCI research articles, one book, and two book chapters. Of these, 28 SCI papers were published during his stay at the Key Laboratory of Biogeography and Bioresources in the Arid Land. In addition, his h-index reached 14, and the total citations of his documents reached 505 articles.

For his best academic achievements, he received numerous fellowships and awards including the President International Fellowship (PIFI) and Talent Young Scientist (TYSP). In 2017, he was officially invited to a “Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation” opening ceremony under the auspices of President Xi Jinping, representing foreign Talent Young Scientists in China, and he also was officially invited to attend the “World Youth Forum” which was held at Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as a representative of Egyptian Talent Young Scientists in China. In 2019 he was selected for the International Partnership Award for Young Scientists of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also participated in other projects at the National Natural Science Foundation and in Xinjiang.

In 2019, with Osama’s effort, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography and Arish University in Egypt signed an official MOU, focusing on the preparation of joint labs, cooperative projects, student exchanges, and technology transfer.

Osama said in his speech that he appreciates the great support of the Xinjiang government, CAS, MOST, the Science and Technology Department of Xinjiang, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, and all leaders, colleagues, and friends who gave him help and support. The China Tianshan Award will encourage him and his team to make more contributions to science and technology in Xinjiang.
