The First Scientific and Technological Popularization Awards of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were announced

  Recently, the First Scientific and Technological Popularization Awards of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were announced. Totally 12 awards were chosen from the 100 recommended projects through appraising, examining and showing in public. In which the collective, personal, activity and writing awards were all 3 separately. The Turpan Eremophytes Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences won a collective award, and Mr. Hu Wenkang of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences won a personal award.

  The Turpan Eremophytes Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences was built in 1976, it is one of the 13 botanical gardens of Chinese Academy of Sciences, where more than 600 species of idioplasmatic resources of eremophytes have been conserved, in which 50 are the rare and endemic species on the brink of distinction, and the garden is an important site for conserving eremophytes and showing desert landscapes. Since recent 10 years, the scientific popularization capability of the Turpan Eremophytes Garden is gradually raised. The garden can satisfy the all-round demands of social societies to the scientific popularization and education of eremophytes and desert landscapes and also to study botany, ecology, environmental science, etc., thus the scientific accomplishment of the public raises, and the social, cultural and economic development is promoted. Moreover, based on a series of scientific popularization activities, the garden spreads the characteristic achievements of wind prevention and wind-blown sand control, Uygur feelings and custom, etc. to whole China and even all over the world. Currently, the Turpan Eremophytes Garden is conferred by government at various levels as the “National Patriotism Education Base”, “National Scientific Popularization Education Base”, “National Teen-age Scientific and Technological Education Base”, “Urumqi Teen-age Scientific Popularization Education Base”, “Turpan Teen-age Scientific Popularization Education Base”, and one of the “Ten Landscapes” in Turpan.

  Mr. Hu Wenkang has achieved the significant achievements in scientific popularization writing, scientific popularization research, scientific popularization planning, etc. in Xinjiang, and he is called the “first person of scientific popularization in Xinjiang”. From 1978, he has published a lot of articles about scientific popularization of the nature, history, human geography, geography, biology, tourism, etc. in various newspapers and journals in Xinjiang, and he has become as an all-powerful writer in scientific popularization in Xinjiang. Moreover, he often takes part in the scientific popularization activities in schools, institutions and communities, and he takes part in the scientific popularization lectures more than 20 times every year. Now he is over sixty years old, but still woks actively, and has written many valuable research reports for the construction of teen-age scientific and technological education bases in Xinjiang, construction of scientific popularization facilities in Xinjiang, construction of scientific popularization capability, construction of Xinjiang minority-language scientific popularization resources centers, etc., and he has got the recognitions and high appraisals from the departments concerned. Mr. Hu Wenkang still perseveres to make his biggest contribution to the economic development and the scientific and technological progress in Xinjiang although he suffers from cancer.
