  In the morning of May 18, the “Starting Ceremony of 2008 Scientific and Technological Activity Week of Xinjiang Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences” was started in Xinjiang Branch.

  Mr. Fu Chunli, the Secretary of Leading Party Members’ Group and Deputy Director of Xinjiang Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, presided over the starting ceremony. Mrs. Yuerguli Jappar, the Secretary of Leading Party Members’ Group and Deputy Director of Scientific and Technological Bureau of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Mr. Wei Shenggui, the Deputy Director of Scientific and Technological Association of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Mr. Nan Tiandi, the Deputy Director of Department of Rural Science and Technology & Urban-rural Scientific Popularization, Scientific and Technological Bureau of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Professor Umanjiang Aili, the Deputy Director of Xinjiang Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Tian Changyan, the Secretary of Party Committee and Deputy Director of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Rohh Muttula, the Deputy Director of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Ajiaikbair, the Deputy Director of Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Wang Na, the Director of Urumqi Astronomical Station of National Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the starting ceremony. About 200 persons including the scientific researchers and graduate students from the institutes and astronomical station and the teachers and pupils from Children’s School of Xinjiang Branch took part in the starting ceremony.

  At the starting ceremony, Mrs. Yuerguli Jappar, the Secretary of Leading Party Members’ Group and Deputy Director of Scientific and Technological Bureau of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region introduced the topics and activity contents of the “2008 Scientific and Technological Activity Week” of the institutes and astronomical station under Xinjiang Branch to the guests. As a representative of scientists, Professor Pan Shijie from Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, an elector of the “Hundred-scientist Program”, gave a speech. He revealed the flying scientific and technological development today from the generation and development of the third-generation TV in China. Later, as the representatives of scientific popularization working personnel, Wu Nan, a doctoral student of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, and Song Tianhua from Urumqi Astronomical Station gave the scientific popularization reports. Finally, the fourth grade pupils from Children’s School of Xinjiang Branch visited the Specimen Museum of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography. In the scientific popularization hall, the pupils were personally on the scene to gasp in admiration of the lifelike animal specimens; they looked on more than thousand specimens of the endemic plant species collected from west Xinjiang and the photos and sand-table model of the shelter forests along the Tarim Desert Highway, etc.

  The topics of the “Scientific and Technological Activity Week” of the institutes and astronomical station under Xinjiang Branch were to “sparkplug the scientific energy and popularize the safety knowledge”. In the national “Scientific and Technological Activity Week”, the institutes and astronomical station under Xinjiang Branch opened the Specimen Museum, Library, Turpan Eremophytes Garden and Fukang Desert Ecosystem Observation and Experimental Station of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography; Key Laboratory of Resources Chemistry, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Laboratory of Materials Physics and Chemistry, Laboratory of Multi-language Information Technology, Scientific Analysis and Test Center, cobalt source and accelerator of Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry; Nanshan Observation Base of Urumqi Astronomical Station of National Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. In the “Scientific and Technological Activity Week”, 25 scientific popularization lectures and reports emphasizing the scientific popularization and safety knowledge and involving the knowledge about ecology, protection of wild animals and plants, astronomy, etc. were organized.
