Professor M. G. Sergeev, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Visited Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS

On December 10-14, Professor M. G. Sergeev, the director of Laboratory of Insect Ecology, Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Novosibirsk State University, visited Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), CAS, and conducted academic exchange. The aim of Professor M.G.Sergeev's visit is to carry out cooperation with XIEG on insect resources expedition, insect ecology and harmful biological species invasion, etc.

   In the workshop of academic exchange, Prof. M. G. Sergeev introduced briefly the Novosibirsk State University and the advances of the studies from the Laboratory. Prof. Lv Zhaozhi, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, and some graduate students, presented reports on recent advances of insect ecology in arid lands. Prof. M. G. Sergeev was very concerned the researches on Orthoptera and Lepidoptera in Xinjiang as well as the risk assessment to harmful biological species invasion. The two sides exchanged the opinions on the joint cooperation between laboratories, personnel exchange and research group training, and reached a preliminary cooperation intention.

   The Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, includes Siberian zoological museum, laboratory of animal monitoring, laboratory of insect ecology and other departments. The institute made outstanding research work on animal taxonomy, pathology and ecology of insects, and harmful invasive species control.
