2011-09-06
On August 26, BAI Chunli, president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), accompanied by JIN Nuo, vice president of Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, inspected the Xinjiang Branch of CAS and listened to the future plans of each institute.
CHEN Xi, president of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), announced that the future plans of XIEG included establishing harmonious development in arid region and actualizing scientific breakthroughs by fully utilizing both advanced research methods and Xinjiang’s unique ecological environments. He detailed three specific major breakthroughs and five key developmental directions for the Institute that will leapfrog cooperative and developmental efforts for Xinjiang and Central Asia.
The three major breakthroughs are as follows: 1) Formation, transformation and utilization of water resource technology in Xinjiang; 2) Metallogenic evaluation in Central Asia; and 3) Progress of eco-environmental evolution and demonstrating ecosystem management in arid areas of Central Asian.
The five key developmental directions include: 1) Research in the evolution of spatial patterns and ecological restoration in major towns of Xinjiang; 2) Pollution reduction through environmental restoration and waste recycling technology in arid areas; 3) Biodiversity conservation in arid areas and eco-agriculture mode in drainage areas; 4) Cultivation and breeding of uniquely functional genes and species; and 5) Prediction and management of natural disasters in Xinjiang.
Prof. CHEN said that the institute will conduct research in the following fields, such as oasis ecology and desert environments, mineral resources, biological resources, soil and water resource, environmental restoration, regional development, cooperation, and more.
BAI Chunli acknowledged the institutes for their significant changes, progress and scientific research achievements. He offered some advice and suggestions for their development, like creating renowned scientific environments to attract more talent, using programs such as the "Hundred Talent Project" and the “Thousand Talent Program.” He also visited the scientific platforms of XJEG and celebrated the institute for reaching its 50th anniversary.
