On June 30, 2012, the mid-term evaluation symposium of Sino-German Sustainable Management of River Oases along the Tarim River (SuMaRiO) was held in Urumqi. This symposium was organized by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), University of Bundeswehr Munich, University of Frankfurt, University of Hohenheim and Xinjiang Society of Soil and Fertilizer.

The Tarim River Basin, a water shortage and undeveloped area, is deeply affected by the global climate change in these years. Due to complex climate change issues, high-difficulty adaptation technology of climate change and fund deficiency, the Tarim River Basin becomes the hotspot area to research the global climate change. During the past 10 years, the government has invested 10.7 billion and took some management engineering to improve the ecological environment of Tarim River Basin. These engineering have obtained some achievements and the ecological environment of Tarim River Basin has effectively improved. However, it is still faced with the influence of extreme climate change. This symposium aims to provide scientific basis for the sustainable management to the oases along the Tarim River by strengthening the Sino-Germany cooperation and introducing advanced adaptation technologies to climate change and management patterns for the river basin.　　　

The symposium has attracted nearly 60 delegates from China and Germany. During the symposium, researches conducted discussions on the ecological environment status of Tarim River Basin in the past 10-year, water resources management framework of Germany, effects of climate change on water resources in Tarim River Basin, theories and methods of ecological simulation for typical river basin and multi-disciplinary studies of sustainable ecological environment management.

After the symposium, the delegates conducted field investigation in Aksu National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station for Farmland Ecosystem and Tarim River.
