A Delegation of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development Visited XIEG

On August 6, 2012, David James Molden, director of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Ashiq Ahmad Khan, chief technical adviser of World Wide Fund (WWF)-Pakistan and WU Ning, project manager of ICIMOD, visited Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences  and conducted academic exchange.

Professor CHEN Xi, director of XIEG, presented his sincere welcome to the visiting delegation. Dr. QIAO Jianfang had a brief introduction of XIEG. Professor CHEN Xi said XIEG and ICIMOD have a long-time cooperative basis, so he hoped that both the sides could strengthen the cooperation on global climate change, protection of glacier and water resources in the future.

During the period of academic exchange, professor YANG Weikang, LUO Yi and associate professor XU Junrong from XIEG presented reports on “Biodiversity Protection of the Border Area between China and Pakistan”, “Study of Snow and Hydrology in Xinjiang” and “Effects of Climate Change on Water Resources in Xinjiang”, respectively.

David James Molden said that ICIMOD will keep effective communication with XIEG continuously and promote the cooperation of two sides on eco-environment and biological resources in Pamir region. 

Founded in 1983, ICIMOD is established in Kathmandu, Nepal, and is a regional inter-governmental learning and knowledge-sharing centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush HimalayasAfghanistanBangladeshBhutanChinaIndiaMyanmarNepal, and Pakistan. Globalization and climate change have an increasing influence on the stability of fragile mountain ecosystems and the livelihoods of mountain people. ICIMOD aims to assist mountain people to understand these changes, adapt to them, and make the most of new opportunities, while addressing upstream-downstream issues.
