Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz of Polish Academy of Sciences Visits Aksu National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station for Farmland Ecosystem

During the period of September 1218, 2012, Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz, academician of Polish Academy of Sciences visited Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences and conducted academic exchange in the Aksu National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station for Farmland Ecosystem (Aksu Station).

Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz introduced the research progress on the effects of climate change on water resources, and discussed the risk of climate change and flood and water footprint in arid land. The researchers from Aksu Station introduced the latest research progress on the technologies for climate change adaptation in the fragile arid zone ecosystem of Northwest China. Combined with the key scientific questions of Sino-German Sustainable Management of River Oases along the Tarim River (SuMaRio), the researchers from the two sides discussed the effect mechanisms, key controlling factors and risk assessment technologies of climate changes on the formation of glacier, snow and runoff. Meanwhile, the two sides reached a cooperation intention in some research fields and directions.

Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz mainly engaged in the researches on the effects of climate changes on water resources for a long term. He was the coordinating lead author of Chapter 4 and sub-report (Europe) in IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Now, he is the assessment expert of the IPCC fifth assessment report on the chapter of climate change and water resources.
