The 1st International Conference on Environment, Energy and Development Held in Rwanda

During 7-8 August 2013, the 1st International Conference on Environment, Energy and Development, jointly organized by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (XIEG), and Independent Institute of Lay Adventists of Kigali (INILAK), was held in Kigali, Rwanda. More than 160 researchers from China, Austria, Morocco, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, India, Ethiopia and Rwanda attended this conference.
The conference was set up to run as two plenary sessions and several concurrent sessions, including climate change, environment regulation and application of new technologies, water management, modeling approaches in environment, environmental risk assessment and energy needs and solutions, sustainable economics, soil conservation, and clean solutions. In the conference, researchers discussed and communicated on the topics of application of new technologies, development of new energy, climate change, environmental health and policy, soil and water conservation, and urban ecology.
Prof. CHEN Xi, director of XIEG, and Dr. Ngamije Jean, rector of INILAK, presented welcome address during the opening plenary. Prof. LI Lanhai from XIEG presented a report of Impacts of Climate Change on Snowcover and Water Resources in Arid Xinjiang in the plenary sessions.
During the conference, XIEG and INILAK put forward a cooperation plan for the next three years, and focused on discussing the establishment of “East African Environmental Research Center”, and the collaborative research projects. This conference laid a foundation for further cooperation between the both sides.
The East African Environmental Research Center aims to promote the collaborative researches and academic communications in the fields of resources and environmental sciences in East Africa, jointly conduct research works on the regional sustainable development of resources and environments, and improve the construction ability of studying on ecology and environmental sciences in East Africa.
