2023-06-25

The International Cooperation Division of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, holds the tenth "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE), themed "To Be More Local," on June 16th.

During the event, Professor Li Lanhai from Canada and Dr. Osama Mohammed from Egypt, who have accumulated over a decade of scientific research experience in China, shared their personal journeys, work undertakings, and life encounters in Xinjiang. Their insightful advice was directed towards the foreign experts and international students in attendance. Li Lanhai emphasized the importance of discovering one's individual niche in scientific research, while Dr. Osama Mohammed recommended that international students embrace the opportunity to expand their social circles and foster new friendships as a means of adapting to life in Xinjiang.

Furthermore, the Salon invited officials from the Urumqi Entry-Exit Administration Department, fostering direct interactions between foreign experts, students, and these officials. The discussions revolved around various topics including visa procedures, residence permits, outdoor activities, and field surveys, addressing the challenges faced by foreigners who work and study in Xinjiang.

The salon saw participation from over 40 foreign experts and international students.

Since 2009, Professor Li Lanhai has held the position of head at the Tianshan Snow Avalanches Research Station, where his research focuses on mountain snow and its associated disasters. Dr. Osama Mohammed specializes in isolating and purifying microbial resources found in arid and unique habitats, resulting in the discovery of more than 20 potential new species and 8 strains of highly effective bacteria that promote plant growth. In recognition of their contributions, both Professor Li Lanhai and Dr. Osama Mohammed were honored with the Xinjiang Tianshan Award for Foreign Experts in 2015 and 2020, respectively.
