Foreign Experts Visit Northern Xinjiang

2023-08-24

In order to enhance foreign experts' understanding of Xinjiang, enrich their experience in Xinjiang, from August 12 to 15, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, held the first "Trip to Northern Xinjiang" for foreign expert representatives.

The trip was divided into two parts: understanding the natural resources and visiting renowned enterprises. The foreign expert representatives visited the Yili Botanical Garden, the Western Tianshan Mountains (Kuerdening) National Nature Reserve, the Yili River Basin Ecosystem Research Station, and the Xinjiang Natural Museum. For enterprises, they visited Xinjiang Huier Agriculture Group Co., Ltd. and TeBian Electric Apparatus (TBEA) Group.

At the Yili Botanical Garden, representatives of foreign experts gained an overview of the entire garden by walking on wooden walkways and visited its science popularization base. They had a deep understanding of the Garden’s important role in genetic resources conservation and in situ conservation of wild fruit trees, as well as the research and demonstration efforts conducted by XIEG. In the Western Tianshan Mountains National Nature Reserve, which receives the highest precipitation in Xinjiang, foreign experts explored the primitive coniferous forest, dominated by Picea schrenkiana, and learned about the measures taken, such as enclosures, to promote the vegetation recovery and preserve the largest primitive coniferous forest in the western part of China and the remaining belt-like distribution of broadleaf forests in the Tianshan Mountains. At the Yili River Basin Ecosystem Research Station, foreign experts visited the science popularization room and laboratories, watched the video "Following the Snow, They Are the 'Snow Chasers' in the Depths of the Tianshan Mountains," and gained a detailed understanding of the station, snow resources, snow disasters, and research progress in the field of remote sensing for snow disaster identification and risk assessment. At the Xinjiang Natural Museum, foreign experts gained a comprehensive understanding of Xinjiang's unique geographical location, abundant natural resources, and diverse ecological landscapes.

In the exhibition hall of Xinjiang Huier Agriculture Group Co., Ltd., they were introduced about the integrated management of water and fertilizer, getting a better understanding of water-soluble fertilizers and the intelligent fertigation system which can improve the soil organic matter and the quality of saline-alkali soil. At TBEA Group, a national high-tech enterprise and a large-scale energy equipment manufacturer in China, they visited the TBEA compound and the exhibition hall, and learned about three listed companies under TBEA Group, namely TBEA (600089SH), Xinjiang Joinworld (600888SH), and Xinte Energy (HK1799), and its history of developing three industries including high-end equipment manufacturing for power transmission and distribution, silicon-based new energy industry, and aluminum-based new materials industry. They also learned about TBEA’s international cooperation with countries from Central Asia, Africa.

This event received high praise from foreign experts. They unanimously believed that the trip deepened their understanding of the field stations of XIEG, renowned enterprises in Xinjiang, as well as the natural resources and cultural environment of Xinjiang. It greatly promoted communication among foreign experts from different countries, effectively alleviated the monotony of daily life from apartment to laboratory, and can ignite scientific ideas and promote scientific collaboration. It is also an effective means for foreign experts to understand Xinjiang, adapt to Xinjiang’s lifestyle, and deepen cultural exchanges and mutual learning. After the trip, they expressed that they will play a role as a bridge, contributing to the sci-tech cooperation between their countries and China, and countries along the Belt and Road between China.

To tell the story of Xinjiang from the perspective of foreign experts, and present the beauty of Xinjiang to the world, field trip reports by foreign experts will be released in future.
