XIEG Holds 13th “Salon for Scientific Exchange”

2023-12-07

On December 1st, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 13th “Salon for Scientific Exchange” (SSE). The salon attracted more than 20 Chinese and foreign experts, scholars and students to participate.

Dr. Mohsin Tanveer, an Australian expert, was invited to make a presentation at the event. His main research interest is plant stress physiology. He shared his latest research on the salt sensitivity of halophytic quinoa and glycophytic spinach under salt stress which was conducted at the Plant Physiology Laboratory at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He concluded that the major differences in salt sensitivity between spinach and quinoa was mainly caused by the differences in regulation of NaCl-induced membrane depolarization (MP), H+-ATPase activity. Quinoa retained more K+ in roots than spinach and two factors were behind the poor K+ retention in spinach: (1) greater salt-induced MP and ROS production, (2) a larger density of ROS-activated cation currents in the elongation zone.

Dr. Mohsin Tanveer is the member of the editorial board of several journals, including Plant Growth Regulation and BMC Plant Biology. According to Google scholars, Dr. Tanveer has h-index of 44, thus his name is among “World’s Top 2% of Scientists” from 2021-2023, published by Stanford University and Elsevier. Recently, he has joined XIEG as an Associate Professor.

During the salon, QIAO Jianfang, Head of the International Cooperation Division, shared the latest management regulations of CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), as well as types of scientific research projects in China that can be applied by foreign experts. Chinese and foreign experts present exchanged views on relevant issues they were interested in.
