2024-01-25

On January 19, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), held the 15th “Salon for Scientific Exchange” (SSE). The event attracted over 30 Chinese and foreign experts and students.
Professor Roman Jashenko, Visiting Scientist under the CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), Director General of the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Chairman of the Kazakhstan National Committee for UNESCO Program “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB), was invited to make a presentation at the event. He gave a detailed introduction about the MAB program, which includes the main functions of biosphere reserves, designation criteria, regional networks, basic MAB documents, MAB’s relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and specific protected area cases, etc. Additionally, he also mentioned that the fifth World Congress of Biosphere Reserves will be held in China in 2025. This will be the first time for the Congress to be held in China and in the Asia-Pacific region.
Professor Ilina Viktoriya, Vice Chairman of the Kazakhstan National Committee for UNESCO Program MAB, also participated in the event. She said, “The designation of biosphere reserves needs the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organizations, and local residents. Dialogue and communication among all stakeholders are necessary.” At the same time, training and education for different groups, such as children and teenagers, should also be strengthened.
At the event, experts from China and abroad exchanged their views on protected area management, ecological education, and the relationship between livelihoods and conservation.
Launched in 1971, UNESCO’s MAB Program is an intergovernmental scientific program, with the International Coordinating Council serving as its main governing body. There are currently 748 biosphere reserves distributed across 134 countries.
