XIEG Holds 27th "Tianshan Academic Forum"

Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held the 27th “Tianshan Academic Forum” on February 28. Professor German Kust, a principal researcher in the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was invited to make a presentation to researchers and students at XIEG.
Entitled “Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) – a modern methodology and approach to gain effective results in sustainable land management and climate change adaptation”, his presentation detailed the LDN definition, approaches to land degradation assessment, LDN indicators as well as existing problems and key challenges.
He used various indicators, for example, land use/land cover change, soil water retention, soil carbon balance, soil erosion, drought index, and explained their assessment results. Participants exchanged views on the selection of LDN baseline, the latest LDN assessment techniques and others.
German Kust’s research interests include sustainable management of natural resources, land management, soil science, agricultural ecology, environmental education, biodiversity conservation, remote sensing. He had worked as independent consultant and expert for several international organizations, such as the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNCCD, and GEF.
