2024-04-02
The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 17th “Salon for Scientific Exchange” (SSE) on March 29. The event was attended by over 30 Chinese and foreign experts and students.
Dr. Sabina Koirala, from Nepal, addressed the audience about “The Science of Yoga”. She introduced the history of Yoga, its different elements such as Yoga Postures, Breathing Techniques, and Meditation, and outlined some benefits of yoga. Additionally, she clarified some prevalent misconceptions about yoga and shared her personal experience.
Scientific studies have shown that yoga can have various physical, mental, and emotional benefits, such as decreasing depression and cortisol levels, reducing cholesterol, enhancing immunity, improving deep sleep and optimism, increasing antioxidant production, and enhancing cardiovascular and respiratory synchronization. These benefits are not exhaustive, as studies have demonstrated its relevance and benefits for individuals across all age groups, from young children to older adults.
Reflecting on her journey since 2011, Dr. Koirala shared, "I've been transformed mentally, physically, and emotionally; it has given me a good life”. She practices the Sudarshan Kriya (SKY) breathing technique along with other yogic practices, taught by 'The Art of Living' – a global humanitarian organization founded by peace ambassador and humanitarian Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Following the presentation, Chinese and foreign experts and students alike engaged in a breathing and meditation session under the guidance of Dr. Sabina Koirala. They shared that the practical session was calming, relaxing, and mindful.
Dr. Sabina Koirala, an Associate Professor at XIEG and a primatologist from Nepal, excels in wildlife conservation, with a special focus on primates. Alongside her scientific achievements, Dr. Koirala has a deep commitment to yoga, practicing diligently over the years. This unique blend of professional expertise and personal practice positions her perfectly to offer insightful perspectives in her presentation on "Yoga and Science," highlighting the synergies between personal well-being and professional excellence.
