XIEG Holds 21st Salon for Scientific Exchange
2024-06-20
The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 21st "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) on June 14, attracting approximately 15 experts from both China and abroad.
Dr. Wasim Sajjad delivered a presentation titled "Sustainable Development Through Microbial Lenses: Desert and Marine Ecosystems." Keeping in view the importance of Xinjiang’s landscape and resources, he emphasized the potential of microbes in these environments to produce value-added compounds and antimicrobials. Dr. Sajjad highlighted that desert microbes possess unique metabolic pathways, enabling the production of novel compounds useful for developing drought-resistant crops, biofertilizers, bioplastics, and robust biocatalysts for industrial applications.
Furthermore, Dr. Sajjad discussed marine microbes' ability to generate bioactive compounds, such as antibiotics and antifungals, essential for combating antibiotic-resistant pathogens. These microbes also produce biofuels, biopolymers, and nutraceuticals, contributing to sustainable energy and health solutions. Harnessing these microbial capabilities promotes eco-friendly technologies, enhances biodiversity, and addresses global challenges.
Following the presentation, participants engaged in discussions on strategies for isolating valuable microbial strains, the commercial viability of compounds and chemicals from microorganisms, and potential collaborative research opportunities.
Dr. Wasim Sajjad is a PIFI visiting scientist at XIEG and an Associate Professor at the National University of Medical Sciences, Pakistan. He is recognized as a certified professional at International Federation of Biosafety Association and biosecurity champions fellow at Health Security Partners, and was selected to join the Global Young Academy as a member in 2023. His extensive background spans academia, industry, and government, focusing on antimicrobials, microbial byproducts, biosafety, and biosecurity.
