XIEG Holds 24th Salon for Scientific Exchange

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 24th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) on August 20, attracting over 20 researchers and students from both China and abroad.

Mr. LI Shaoyi, former Head, the Secretariat of International Resource Panel, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), shared his opinions on the carbon border adjustment tax of European Union (EU) and its potential impact on UN climate change negotiations.

Mr. WANG Jiyuan, former Country Director for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR, the International Labour Organization (ILO), introduced the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Development system.

Mr. XUE Yuxue, former Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), elaborated the Global Environment Facility (GEF) small grants programme (SGP) and its approach to environment conservation.

Mr. LI Donglin, former Country Director, ILO, shared his work experience of helping the earthquake-affected population in Pakistan.

Ms. HE Jinglin, former Senior Programme Officer, UNAIDS, shared her experience of preventing AIDS and providing care support for people living with HIV.

During the event, participants exchanged views on climate change, environmental pollution, SDGs and other topics. This event provided an opportunity for researchers and students at XIEG to have a dialogue with former senior officials of the United Nations, and enhanced their understanding of the United Nations system.
