XIEG Holds 25th Salon for Scientific Exchange

2024-09-13

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 25th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) on September 6, attracting over 20 researchers and students from both China and abroad.

Dr. Kuchkarova Nigora delivered a presentation on bioactive secondary metabolites from endophytic microbes. She explained the bioactivity screening procedure of three natural compounds produced by Microascus species of invasive Solanum rostratum and these compounds' growth regulatory activity on monocot and dicot plants. She found that all compounds exhibited promotive activity on seedlings when applied concentrations ranged between 5~100 µg/mL, while a suppressive effect occurred when the applied concentration reached 500 µg/mL. Therefore, these compounds have good potential to be further explored as environment-friendly bioherbicides.

Dr. Muddaser Shah delivered a presentation on exploring the aroma profile and biological applications of Scutellaria nuristanica. He elaborated on his research findings, revealing fifty constituents in Scutellaria nuristanica essential oils (SNEO). He further explored the antidiabetic significance of the SNEO, and confirmed that two compounds of SNEO depicted significant antidiabetic potential. Besides, he suggested that the tested compounds could be a potent source for discovering antidiabetic medications.

Following the presentation, participants exchanged views on advanced techniques for compound identification, and how to link laboratory work with pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, and others.

Dr. Kuchkarova Nigora, PIFI Visiting Scientist at XIEG, and Assistant Professor at the Institute of Chemistry of Plant Substances under the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. Her research experience lies in isolation and identification of endophytic microbes and screening of natural products bioactivities.

Dr. Muddaser Shah, PIFI Visiting Scientist at XIEG, and Assistant Professor at University of Swabi, Pakistan. He is fascinated by research on natural products, compound isolation and biological activities, and essential oil extraction. He is interested in essential oil extraction and isolation of some innovative compounds to devise novel medications and agents responsible for plant growth regulation.
