XIEG Advocates for Cooperation in Biodiversity Conservation at CBD COP16
2024-10-31
During the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, co-organized the session “Achieving 30x30 Protected Areas” at the sixth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity in Cali, Colombia, on October 26, 2024.
The sixth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity, held as one of the major parallel meetings, was jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the University of Tokyo, the Consortium of Scientific Partners on Biodiversity (CSP), and the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).
The forum aims to strengthen the policy-science-society interface that supports objective and well-informed decision-making to facilitate the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
The two-day forum included 15 sessions. The session, Achieving 30x30 Protected Areas, brought together seven representatives from international organizations, governments, universities and foundations to share case studies from different countries and regions, and to discuss challenges and solutions to achieving the 30x30 target.
At this session, LI Wenjun, Head of the Herbarium at XIEG, gave a presentation on cooperation between China and Central Asia to contribute to achieving the 30x30 target. He introduced the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance for Arid Lands (BCAA) which was launched at CBD COP 15 in 2022, the Dialogue Mechanism among Leaders of China-Central Asia National Research Institutions signed by over 20 institutions in 2023, and the joint scientific expedition on ecological environment of Aral Sea in 2024.
In addition, LI Wenjun shared his views on challenges in biodiversity conservation and called for more effort and cooperation to protect the biodiversity in arid regions.
During the CBD COP15 in Canada, XIEG signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the SCBD and has become a CSP member since then. In future, XIEG will continue to expand cooperation with international partners, striving to make greater contributions to the implementation of GBF.
