2024-11-05

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 28th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) On October 25. The event attracted more than 30 Chinese and international researchers and students.

At this event, three young researchers from XIEG, Prof. BAI Jie, Associate Prof. FANG Gonghuan, and Associate Prof. Koirala Sharma Sabina, were invited to make presentations on their experience of attending international conferences, and how they benefit from the international conferences.

BAI Jie compared the different experience of attending large-scale international conferences and small-scale themed conferences, as well as how to prepare abstracts and posters, and improve presenting skills. She also shared the budget management of attending academic conferences and discussed how to participate in international academic conferences more effectively. She regards international conferences as important platforms to find international partners. "Face-to-face communication is easier to promote cooperation," she said.

FANG Gonghuan shared the international conferences in the field of earth sciences that she had participated in, including the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly and the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting. In particular, she shared her experience and skills in communicating with influential experts and promoting academic collaboration at international conferences.

Koirala Sharma Sabina emphasized the importance of attending international conferences, especially for young scientists. Besides, she shared the information of several important conferences in 2025 and encouraged the young scientists to participate actively. "Bring your questions to the conferences, and communicate with people from different disciplines and cultures, you will have new ideas and insights for your research," she concluded.

After their presentations, the three researchers joined a panel discussion and shared the goals of attending international conferences with all participants, i.e., "build academic network, carry out academic exchanges, promote academic cooperation". They also talked about how academic conferences can promote innovation and shared their ideas on the conferences that can be organized by XIEG in future.
