XIEG Holds 29th Salon for Scientific Exchange

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held the 29th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) On November 8. The event attracted more than 20 Chinese and international researchers and students.
Dr. Elena Bykova delivered a presentation on data collection of endangered species of vertebrates in Uzbekistan. She detailed the steps of data collection in Fergana Valley and Karakalpakstan, including: completing a full list of endangered species, conducting an inventory of open data sources, conducting field work to obtain up-to-date data, establishing a wildlife monitoring network, completing a verified list of endangered species, filling out forms with primary accounting data, and creating a database with cadastral information on endangered species. In addition, she shared the approach of counting the number of white stork (Ciconia ciconia asiatica) nests.
After the presentation, participants discussed techniques for wildlife data collection, diet and habit of white storks, and human-wildlife conflict, among others.
Dr. Elena Bykova, zoologist, Head of Laboratory of the Endangered Species Census and Cadaster, Institute of Zoology, Uzbek Academy of Sciences, and co-founder of the Saiga Conservation Alliance. She has actively engaged in biodiversity conservation in Uzbekistan for more than 15 years. Dr. Elena Bykova's visit at XIEG is financially supported by the CAS-ANSO Fellowship, which was jointly set up by CAS and the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO) to enhance regional and global capacity in science and technology and promote broader cooperation and communication in the Belt and Road countries and beyond.
