XIEG Wins Two Prizes at Xinjiang Scientific and Technological Innovation Conference
2024-11-25
On November 20, the Xinjiang Scientific and Technological Innovation Conference commenced at the Xinjiang Ying Bin Hotel, honoring the winners of the 2023 Science and Technology Awards. Two research teams led by Prof. ZHANG Daoyuan and Prof. ZENG Fanjiang from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, won the first prize and the second prize of the Natural Science Awards of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, respectively.
ZHANG Daoyuan's team focused on a moss that is highly tolerant of extreme drought, known as "drying without dying", and explored the adaptation process and regulatory mechanisms of this drought-tolerant plant and investigated genes associated with drought resistance. Their study can contribute to crop improvement, and offer new perspectives for molecular breeding in future.

ZENG Fanjiang's team studied the agronomic effects of high-efficiency nitrogen fertilizers in drip-irrigated cotton fields and examined the spatiotemporal characteristics of greenhouse gas emissions and the microbial mechanisms of nitrous oxide production. They developed a sustainable fertilizer management model tailored for drip-irrigated cotton fields, promoted the green development of cotton industries in arid regions, and provided a solution for achieving China's "dual carbon" goals by reducing agricultural emissions.
