XIEG Holds 31st Salon for Scientific Exchange
2024-12-05
On November 28, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held the 31st "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE). Two PIFI visiting scientists were invited to share their research progress. The event attracted more than 30 Chinese and international experts and students.
Salamat Abdyzhapar gave a presentation on the climatic and hydrological changes in the Naryn River Basin. The Naryn River originates in the Tian Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan and flows into the Ferghana Valley, where it converges with the Kara-Darya to form the Syr-Darya River. This river then continues its journey towards the northern Aral Sea, traversing Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. He detailed the changes in temperature and precipitation and their effects on the runoff of the Naryn River. He concluded that, under the influence of global warming, the runoff of the Naryn River is expected to rise in the spring and decline in the summer in future.
Andrey Korolyuk introduced the vegetation zones of the West Siberian Plain, the largest plain in Asia, including tundra zone, forest-tundra zone, forest zone, forest steppe zone and steppe zone. He presented the spatial distribution of vegetation species in these zones, revealed the main ecological factors that determine their distribution, and pointed out the main threats that each zone faces.
After the presentations, participants discussed the monitoring and use of water resources, ecosystem dynamics, and other topics.
Salamat Abdyzhapar is an associate professor at the Institute of Geology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyzstan. He is also the co-director of the Bishkek Branch of the CAS Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia. His research focuses on climate change and water resource management.
Andrey Korolyuk is a professor at the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His primary research interests include vegetation mapping and the classification of plant communities.
