PIFI Visiting Scientist at XIEG Appointed as Co-chair of GEO BON

Alice Hughes, a PIFI visiting scientist at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been recently appointed as the co-chair of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON).

Dr. Hughes has been collaborating with researchers from XIEG, focusing on vital issues surrounding biodiversity conservation in some of the world's most challenging environments. She has been engaged in promoting biodiversity research in Xinjiang and Central Asia, assessing global biodiversity targets and indicators, and advancing the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 

XIEG is prepared to strengthen its research network under the leadership and expertise of Dr. Hughes. As the world grapples with escalating environmental challenges, her new role positions her at the forefront of global collaboration to monitor and enhance biodiversity.

Alice Hughes is currently an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong and has over 16 years experience working in the Asia-Pacific region. Her work focuses on patterns of biodiversity and drivers of biodiversity change, as well as understanding the availability and representativeness of data to develop priorities and monitor change.

The Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) is a global network of researchers dedicated to improving the acquisition, coordination, and delivery of biodiversity information at the global, regional, and national levels.GEO BON has created a large global network and community of practice involved in biodiversity observationsand has been recognized as a partner by the Convention on Biological Diversity.
