2025-04-03

On March 31st, Zhasulan Kenzhalin, Chairman of the Kazakh Chamber of Environmental Auditors (KCEA), and Galym Berkinbaev, Vice Chairman of the KCEA, visited the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and had in-depth discussions on desertification control and international cooperation. This visit aims to promote experience sharing and technical collaboration between China and Kazakhstan, establishing a foundation for future cooperation.

Prof. LI Shengyu, Deputy Head of the State Key Laboratory of Desert and Oasis Ecology at XIEG, gave a detailed introduction to the lab's history, organizational structure, main achievements, and international collaborations. He highlighted that the technical models developed by the lab have been successfully applied to a number of major projects, offering a "Chinese solution" for global desertification control.

Chairman Zhasulan Kenzhalin commended XIEG's accomplishments in combating desertification, stating, "The technologies of the institute hold great significance. We aim to introduce these technical achievements to Kazakhstan to enhance our desertification control efforts."

Vice Chairman Galym Berkinbaev engaged in specific discussions with Chinese experts about technological details related to various projects, including the edge-locking project in the Taklimakan Desert, the construction of shelterbelts along the Taklimakan Desert Highway, and initiatives for wind prevention and sand fixation along the Ge'ermu-Ku'erle Railway.

Prof. ZHENG Shi, Director of the China-SCO Institute of Economy and Trade (CSCOIET), accompanied the delegation throughout their visit and proposed a tripartite cooperation framework. He suggested that CSCOIET could facilitate technical training and technology transfer between XIEG and KCEA through the platform of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

During the visit, the delegation also visited the Xinjiang Natural Museum.

The KCEA, a non-profit organization founded in 2006 by the former Kazakh Ministry of Environmental Protection in alignment with the Ecological Codes, currently has 80 members spanning the 17 regions in Kazakhstan. With its headquarters in Almaty and six regional offices, KCEA focuses on promoting the professionalization of ecological auditing and upholding industry standards, having trained over 160 professionals in the field to date.
