2025-05-14
On May 6, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), held the 39th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE). The event attracted about 40 Chinese and foreign experts and students to participate.
Prof. Bilquees Gul, delivered a presentation titled " Utilizing cropping systems for the management of soil salinity". She elaborated on the application potential of halophyte planting technology in the prevention and control of soil salinization and sustainable agricultural development. She focused on the large-scale cultivation of saline-alkali tolerant forage grass using saline-alkali land resources, which significantly improved the economic benefits of the region while effectively improving salinized soil.
In addition, Prof. Bilquees Gul presented research work on the application of halophyte cultivation systems in saline-alkali-affected areas such as the Tar desert in Pakistan, as well as her collaborative research results. She highlighted the importance of these innovative achievements in addressing soil salinization, food security and climate change.
After the representation, the participants discussed the utilization of saline water in arid areas and the development of the economic value of halophytes.
Prof. Bilquees Gul is an outstanding scientist of CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), Member of Pakistan Academy of Sciences. She is currently working at the University of Karachi, Pakistan. Her research fields include plant eco-physiological, biochemical, genetic and Agriculture. She has published over 250 academic papers and edited seven monographs.
