2025-05-19

On May 13, Zufar Narzullaev, Chairman of Uzbekistan Railways, led a four-member delegation on a visit to the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two sides conducted an in-depth discussion on scientific and technological collaboration for desertification control along railway lines in Uzbekistan's desert areas.

During the discussion, ZHANG Yuanming, Director of XIEG, highlighted the institute's expertise in combating desertification, noting the successful application of technologies in China and countries along the Belt and Road. He expressed the institute's willingness to deepen cooperation with Uzbekistan by leveraging their respective strengths. The collaboration aims to facilitate effective, locally tailored desertification control projects through technical exchanges, personnel training, and joint research initiatives.

LI Shengyu, Deputy Head of the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Desert-Oasis Ecological Construction, provided an overview of desertification challenges in Xinjiang. He also shared XIEG's technological models for sand hazards along highways and railways, strategies for developing economic activities in desert areas, and successful ecological restoration cases.

Zufar Narzullaev underscored the importance of combating desertification along railway lines in Uzbekistan, describing it as a key priority designated by the Uzbek President. He expressed strong interest in adopting XIEG's ecological technologies and advancing joint efforts in green technology application and scientific research.

Following the discussion, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing a framework for future cooperation on greening the areas along the railway lines in Uzbekistan's desert regions.
