XIEG Holds 41st Salon for Scientific Exchange

2025-05-29

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 41st "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE) on May 23rd, focusing on experiences and cutting-edge trends gleaned from the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly. The event spotlighted participation in such global forums as a crucial avenue for scientific collaboration and advancement.

The event featured presentations from two XIEG researchers, Associate Researcher LI Yupeng and Associate Researcher ZHANG Bo, who shared insights from their EGU experiences and discussed practical approaches to international cooperation.

LI recounted his EGU experience, covering topics ranging from abstract submission and visa applications to the importance of active academic exchange. “Actively sharing your research and engaging in discussions on the forefront issues of your field is paramount at international academic conferences,” he said. “This is essential for building a personal international cooperation network.”

ZHANG delivered an academic report titled 'Exchange Sparks Ideas, Collaboration Fuels Growth'which he also presented at EGU 2025, focusing on the study of desert plants in extreme arid regions and their application in combating desertification. In addition, he shared his experiences and impressions from visiting renowned scientists in his field after the conference.

Following the presentations, Peter Gilruth, a senior advisor at the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), engaged in a dialogue with the young scientists. Discussions covered topics such as the potential for collaborative research in arid regions, funding opportunities for scientific and technological projects under the United Nations framework, and current challenges in international cooperation. Participants also offered science-backed perspectives on the UN’s ongoing reform plans.

By sharing experiences from EGU, one of the world’s leading geoscience conferences, this event provided a practical approach for international collaboration.

The European Geosciences Union General Assembly is a major international gathering in the Earth sciences, attracting thousands of participants from over 100 countries annually. XIEG has actively encouraged participation in international conferences and supported high-level exchange programs, significantly enhancing its international profile in environmental governance in arid regions.
