XIEG Participates in 7th China-Arab States Expo

2025-09-05

From August 28 to 31, the 7th China-Arab States Expo was held in Yinchuan, Ningxia. It was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Committee.

Prof. LEI Jiaqiang, Chair of the Association for Combating Desertification of the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO-ACD) and a researcher at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), participated in the Expo.

The Expo featured a series of high-profile activities. At the China–Central Asia Seminar on Desertification Control Cooperation held on August 28 with participation of more than 30 people, Prof. LEI presented "The Xinjiang Practice and International Examples of the 'Green is Gold' Concept," detailing the region's desertification control efforts to an audience of over 30 people. He highlighted recent successes from China's scientific cooperation with Central Asian and African nations. LEI called for enchanced international collaboration, shared governance platforms, and talent development for global desertification management. Representatives from five Central Asian countries agreed that desertification hinders development, and shared their experience of combating desertification. Attendees unanimously advocated for integrated local knowledge and modern science for ecological and socio-economic progress.

At the International Symposium on Desertification Control Exchange and Cooperation held on August 29, approximately 200 participants exchanged insights on China-Arab desertification cooperation. Prof. LEI presented "Successful Cases for Mitigating Desertification and Land Degradation in the Great Green Wall of Africa," detailing "China's Solution" and its application in Africa. Using field images and data, he showcased achievements in demonstration zones like Mauritania's China-Africa Green Technology Park and an Ethiopian pilot project. Johns Muleso Kharika, Chief of Science, Technology, and Innovation Unit at UNCCD Secretariat, complimented XIEG and recognized its continued and remarkable work in the global efforts to combat desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD).

LEI Jiaqiang gives his presentation.

Johns Muleso Kharika awards a compliment letter to LEI Jiangqiang.
