XIEG Receives Recognition from UNCCD Secretariat

2025-09-22

At the 7th China–Arab States Expo, Johns Muleso Kharika, Chief of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Unit at the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), presented a compliment letter and a commemorative trophy to the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences. In commemoration of the UNCCD's 30th anniversary, the letter recognizes XIEG’s continued and remarkable work in the global efforts to combat desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD).

In 1995, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) awarded XIEG two certificates recognizing its work on two projects: the sand encroachment control project in Xinjiang’s Cele county, and the Tamarix project in Xinjiang counties. In 2015, while visiting the Taklamakan Desert Research Station and the shelterbelts along the desert highway, Ibrahima Thiaw, then UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Deputy Executive Director, remarked: "This is a unique research center in the middle of the desert, doing amazing work under extreme conditions. Thank you for your dedication. Your research will be valuable for the whole world."

Thirty years later, XIEG has once again been recognized by a United Nations organization. This recognition serves not only as a testament to past achievements but also as an encouragement for embracing new challenges in future. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, XIEG will continue to promote the concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. The institute is actively disseminating its "Chinese solutions" across vast landscapes, from the Taklamakan Desert to the drying Aral Sea basin in Central Asia, and further to the arid Sahel region of the Sahara Desert, planting seeds of hope for a more sustainable future.
