2025-09-22

The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences (IGRAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen scientific collaboration. The agreement was signed on September 13 by ZHANG Yuanming, Director of XIEG, and Academician Olga Solomina, Director of IGRAS.

The MOU outlines plans for joint research projects, personnel exchanges, student training, and the co-organization of academic conferences. The collaboration will focus on ecological restoration in arid regions of Central Asia, environmental conservation and monitoring, and sustainable use of natural resources.

XIEG and IGRAS share common research interests and extensive expertise in Central Asia. Prof. German Kust of IGRAS, currently a Visiting Scientist at XIEG under the CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), is already collaborating on a desertification and land degradation project in the China-Russia border region.

"This agreement will leverage the strengths of both institutes to address critical environmental challenges in Central Asia," said ZHANG Yuanming.

IGRAS is Russia's oldest and largest institute dedicated to geographical research. Founded in 1918, this institute comprises 15 research departments covering areas such as climate, hydrology, glaciology, and remote sensing. Up to now, it has conducted over 40 scientific expeditions in Central Asia.
