2025-09-23
On September 12, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held the 46th "Salon for Scientific Exchange" (SSE), featuring Dr. German Kust, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences. The event attracted over 30 researchers and students from China and abroad.
Dr. Kust delivered a presentation titled "The Concept of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN): New Perspectives on Application Based on Experiences in Central Asia". He anchored his discourse within the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, offering fresh insights into recent advances in LDN research and its practical implementation.
His address navigated through the research background, methodologies, and proxy indicators pertinent to LDN. He also showcased his team's crucial findings from their LDN assessment studies in Central Asia, with a particular emphasis on the Aral Sea Basin. Dr. Kust underscored the critical importance of dynamic assessments, arguing they are essential for a more accurate representation of the true state of land degradation.
During the Q&A session, participants discussed methodologies for implementing high-resolution remote sensing data at national and regional levels to address needs in land degradation assessment. The event also provided insights into the historical development and future directions of international efforts towards LDN, highlighting significant cases of global cooperation.
Dr. German Kust is a PIFI visiting scientist at XIEG, CAS. He is an internationally renowned expert in earth sciences. His pioneering research on desertification, land degradation, and drought dynamics is globally influential. Dr. Kust has led over 30 major projects and holds significant advisory roles within the United Nations system.
