International Training Workshop on Multi-Hazard Monitoring with GIS and RS Technologies Successfully Held in Rwanda

On Nov. 11, with the support from the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK), and the Joint Research Center for Natural Resources and Environment in East Africa, the “International Training Workshop on Multi-Hazard Monitoring with GIS and RS Technologies” was successfully held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The workshop aimed to improve East Africa’s ability to respond to natural disasters by using advanced spatial information technologies. Prof. Richard Niyonkuru, Vice President of UNILAK, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Prof. WANG Qingfeng, Director of the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center, and Prof. DUAN Weili, Deputy Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, participated online and delivered speeches. More than 50 teachers and students from UNILAK took part in this workshop.

During the training, experts from China and Rwanda delivered professional lectures on the theories and technologies of GIS and RS. The topics covered geospatial data processing, multi-source RS image analysis, and the application of machine learning in identifying geological disasters, among others. Using typical cases from Rwanda, they provided detailed explanations of how these technologies are applied in disaster monitoring, risk evaluation, drought simulation, and ecosystem vulnerability evaluation.

Group photo
This workshop supported Rwanda’s national strategy for disaster prevention, disaster reduction, and sustainable development through technology transfer and capacity building. In addition, the workshop further strengthened scientific and technological collaboration between China and Africa in the fields of RS and GIS.
