XIEG Holds 50th Salon for Scientific Exchange
2025-12-08
The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (XIEG) successfully held the 50th Salon for Scientific Exchange on Nov. 28. This event featured Dr. Mohamed Elfleet from the Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies (CEEs) at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, as the keynote speaker.
He delivered an insightful presentation, titled “University Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem.” He gave an in-depth exploration of how modern universities can transcend traditional academic boundaries to become hubs that connect academia, industry, and government. He emphasized that forging close strategic partnerships among these three sectors is crucial for translating cutting-edge achievements in scientific research into market production, fostering a culture of innovation, and cultivating entrepreneurship.
“To truly drive innovation and entrepreneurship, a university ecosystem must proactively establish such tri-sector partnerships,” Prof. Elfleet noted. “These collaborations are not merely add-ons. They form the foundation for transforming knowledge into tangible social benefits and sustainable practices.” He went on to explain how this ecosystem can help create viable business models and provide clear pathways for small and medium-sized enterprises to introduce new technologies and services derived from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) research to the market.
During the discussion, Prof. Elfleet engaged in in-depth conversations with participants on topics such as the importance of innovative ecosystem models for research institutions in arid zones and pathways for translating scientific results. He particularly recognized XIEG’s scientific research strengths in arid-zone ecology and green technologies. He noted that its scientific advancements hold significant potential for commercial application and policy impact. He also encouraged the institute to continue strengthening academic-industry collaborations.
This session of the salon attracted the participation of numerous Chinese and international researchers and students. It effectively promoted intellectual exchange and academic dialogue between the institute and its global peers. It also added new momentum to the institute’s scientific innovation capacity and internationalization.
Prof. Elfleet is a renowned expert in environmental science with more than forty years of research and practice experience. He is particularly known for his contributions to climate change, the circular economy, and carbon management.
