High-level Delegation from Uzbekistan Visits XIEG

A delegation led by Mr. Akmaljon Kosimov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, visited the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on Dec. 15. The purpose of the visit was to learn about China’s accomplishments and expertise in ecological restoration and agricultural development.

During the visit, the two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on common concerns, including desertification control and saline-alkali land management. Prof. ZHANG Yuanming, Director of XIEG, chaired the meeting, which was attended by Chinese researchers, as well as Uzbek researchers and students currently working and studying at the Institute.

At the outset, Director ZHANG provided an overview of XIEG’s profile, research strengths, and accomplishments in international collaboration. He highlighted recent cooperation and progress between XIEG with its Uzbek partners in ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, water-efficient agricultural irrigation, and talent development. He also mentioned the headquarters of CAS Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia in Tashkent, which exemplifies the Institute’s commitment to strengthening scientific collaboration with Uzbekistan.

Mr. Kosimov introduced the members of the Uzbek delegation, noting that it comprises high-level officials and multidisciplinary representatives, including provincial governors, district heads, and leaders from departments related to agriculture, water resources, and finance. He emphasized Uzbekistan’s extensive arid and saline-alkali lands and expressed strong interest in deepening cooperation with XIEG in scientific research, technology demonstration, and joint talent cultivation to support sustainable agricultural development in Uzbekistan.

During the technical exchange session, Prof. LEI Jiaqiang presented successful case studies from Xinjiang on desertification prevention and control. Prof. TIAN Changyan presented key technologiecal achievements in the utilization of saline-alkali land to promote high-quality development of agriculture. Both experts emphasized the great potential for future colllaboration between Xinjiang and Uzbekistan in these areas.

Exchange of gifts

The visit by Mr. Kosimov and his delegation reflects recognition of XIEG’s achievements in ecological and environmental research. Over the years, XIEG has actively collaborated with Central Asian research institutions through establishing international cooperation platforms, jointly implementing research projects, conducting technology demonstrations, and fostering talent development.
