On February 27, SUN Weidong, Secretary General of the China-Central Asia mechanism, met with ZHANG Yuanming, Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Director of the CAS Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA), along with WU Yan, Deputy Director of the CAS Bureau of International Cooperation.
During the meeting, ZHANG Yuanming and WU Yan briefed on cooperation between CAS, its affiliated institutions, and Central Asian partners, highlighting the progress achieved. They noted that long-standing partnerships supported by platforms such as the RCEECA have steadilyadvanced scientific and technological cooperation in regional resource management and environmental issues. This has included joint laboratory development, talent cultivation, collaborative research, and knowledge sharing, yielding a range of meaningful outcomes. They added that, with the guidance and support of the Secretariat, CAS and its affiliated institutions are ready to further deepen and expand cooperation with Central Asian partners, contributing to green and sustainable regional development and high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
SUN Weidong highly commended the progress achieved by CAS and XIEG in working with Central Asian research institutions and acknowledged the contributions made by all parties to regional ecological governance, emphasizing that regional environmental issues are intrinsically linked to the long-term development and national security of both China and its Central Asian countries. He also referred to a series of recent ecological summits held in Central Asia, which have generated initiatives on climate change, water resource utilization, desertification control, Aral Sea restoration, and glacier protection. Many of these proposals were subsequently incorporated into the Astana Declaration of the Second China-Central Asia Summit.
He added that the Secretariat will continue to support practical cooperation between CAS, its affiliated institutions and Central Asian partners within the China-Central Asia Mechanism, facilitate the implementation of the outcomes of the Second China-Central Asia Summit, advance the high-quality China-Central Asia cooperation and build a closer China-Central Asia community with a shared future.
