XIEG Holds 54th Salon for Scientific Exchange
2026-03-30
The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully held the 54th Salon for Scientific Exchange on March 27. This event invited Dr. Fabien Muhirwa, a postdoctoral research fellow at XIEG, as the keynote speaker.
Focusing on water-energy-food (WEF), Dr. Fabien Muhirwa elaborated on the context and philosophy of the WEF nexus. “The WEF nexus concept was formally introduced at a Bonn international conference in 2011 as Solutions for the Green Economy.
“WEF is an integrated approach for sustainable resource management that moves beyond isolated sectoral planning to address complex interdependencies,” he said.
He then shared his research experience in the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus in Africa and globally, including explaining the approach to quantifying the WEF nexus and integrating other ecosystem components within it.
During the discussion, the participants actively engaged with him on topics such as the feasibility of implementing the WEF nexus at the country level, the differing contexts of developing and developed countries in WEF nexus implementation, and the accountabilities of WEF stakeholders.
Dr. Fabien Muhirwa is a postdoctoral research fellow at XIEG. He holds a PhD in Natural Resource Science from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2023). As an academic editor for the PLOS ONE journal, he has published over 40 scientific works in leading journals, such as the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Journal of Resources, Conservation & Recycling. His publications also include book chapters on water, energy, and food security nexus issues and sustainable development in Africa and globally.
