The Training Workshop on Technologies for Combating Desertification in Central Asia Successfully Held in Tashkent

From May 19 to 23, the Training Workshop on Technologies for Combating Desertification in Central Asia was successfully held in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan.

The workshop was jointly sponsored by the Agency for Afforestation, Expansion of Green Areas, and Combating Desertification (Uzbekistan Forestry Agency) under the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan (NCECC), and the China-Central Asia Cooperation Center for Desertification Prevention and Control.

It was co-organized by the CAS Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (CAS RCEECA), the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (XIEG), and the Central AsiaUniversity of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University).

Nearly 100 technical experts, researchers, administrators, and agricultural extension specialists from China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan participated in the workshop.

Under the theme Sharing China’s Experience, Promoting Regional Green Cooperation”, the workshop comprehensively showcased China’s knowledge and technologies in desertification prevention and control, water-saving agriculture, management of saline lands, grassland degradation control, desert-based economic development, and public participation in sand control.

Participants reached broad consensus on addressing regional ecological challenges, building a C5+1 multilateraldesertification control cooperation network (Central Asian practice + Chinese technologies), deepening pragmaticChina-Central Asia technological collaboration, and scaling up proven Chinese practices.

Aziz Abdukhakimov, Chairman of NCECC, attended the workshop and held talks with the Chinese delegation. Two cooperation agreements on ecological management were signed during the event.

On May 20, 2026, the CAS RCEECA and the China-Central Asia Desertification Prevention and Control Cooperation Center signed a partnership agreement at the secretariat of the China-Central Asia cooperation mechanism in Xian. The workshop was the first activity under this agreement.
