The 24th Chinese Young Soil Scientists and 19th Chinese Young Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Scientists Conference Held in Urumqi

From August 13 to 16, the 24th Chinese Young Soil Scientists and 19th Chinese Young Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Scientists Conference was convened in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The event brought together over 350 experts, scholars, and early-career researchers from more than 100 universities, research institutes, and related organizations across China. Participants engaged in academic exchanges on frontier topics in soil, plant nutrition, and fertilizer research, sharing the latest research advances and innovative outcomes.

Prof. ZHANG Yuanming, Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (XIEG), stated in his opening address that Xinjiang serves as a natural laboratory for investigating the interactions among water, soil, biota, and ecological environments. He expressed the hope that more young researchers would pay attention to Xinjiang, engage with the region, and deepen collaborative efforts around major scientific questions pertaining to arid zones.

The program featured seven thematic parallel sessions, covering areas such as soil biology, ecology, and soil health; soil nutrients and elemental cycling; and plant nutrition and novel fertilizers. In these sessions, attending scholars presented systematic overviews of recent progress, methodological innovations, and practical applications, and engaged in in-depth discussions on disciplinary development trends, critical scientific questions, and technical challenges.

As one of the organizing institutions for the conference, XIEG played an active role in both event coordination and academic exchange. The conference not only facilitated enhanced collaboration between Xinjiang and related research institutions, universities, and academic societies, but also provided a valuable platform for more in-depth scholarly dialogue on topics related to arid-zone ecosystems, soil resources, and ecological security in the region.
