The Method for Raising Seedling of Apocynum venetum L. on Saline Soil invented by the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS, was granted the Invention Patent Certification by the State Intellectual Property Office of the P. R. China (Patent Number: ZL2008 1 0072806.6)
Apocynum venetum L., which belongs to the family Apocynaceae, is a valuable fiber plant. The fiber of the plant has thin and long, soft, high luminance and tensile- resistant characteristics. It is a good material for textile industry and also valuable Chinese medicinal, nectar and forage plant. A. venetum is widely developed in the overflowing belts of spring water and flooding areas in saline soils in southern Xinjiang, which is because the germination of A. venetum seeds needs limnetic environments. As it is lack of this kind of habitat in northern Xinjiang, the survive rate after seed germination in high saline soil is only 20%, which greatly limit the uses of A. venetum in northern Xinjiang. However, if the seedlings are planted, the survive rate can reach 85% and the seedlings grow well and the plant can be harvested in the first planting year. This method of planting seedlings of A. venetum provides a demonstration to the sustainable and effective use of saline soils in northern Xinjiang and is of important significance to improve eco-environment.
The breakthrough of the invention is the seedlings of A. venetum which germinate and grow in saline soil were transplanted to other similar saline soils.
