I. About XIEG

Established in 1961, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), stands as a beacon of scientific and technological advancement in Xinjiang. Focusing on major scientific and technological challenges XIEG conducts cutting-edge research in ecology, environment, and resources in arid regions, and supports the Silk Road Economic Belt initiative and the overarching goal of social stability and long-term security in Xinjiang.

XIEG specializes in ecological and environmental monitoring and evaluation, mineral exploration and environmental governance, sustainable utilization of biological resources in arid regions, income enhancement for farmers and herdsmen, and regional green development, in Xinjiang and Central Asia.

XIEG ranks first globally in publication on arid land water resources and oasis scientific research, and has entered the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in five disciplines (Earth Science, Environment/Ecology, Plant and Animal Science, Agricultural Science, and Engineering Science). XIEG has garnered over 300 awards at different levels, including two UNEP Awards and nearly 40 national awards.

XIEG has established various research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Desert and Oasis Ecology, the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Desert-Oasis Ecological Construction, the Xinjiang Research Center for Mineral Resources, the Silk Road Green Development Research Center, and the Xinjiang Tourism Academy, along with 12 field stations in Xinjiang and 19 field stations jointly established overseas.

Furthermore, XIEG has ten postgraduate majors, including physical geography, human geography, environmental science, botany, ecology, soil and water conservation and desertification control, cartography and geographical information systems, earth exploration and information technology, resources and environment, and biology and medicine.

XIEG also offers six majors for doctoral degree covering physical geography, human geography, botany, ecology, cartography and geographic information systems (GIS), earth exploration and information technology, and has four postdoctoral stations for research in Geography, Ecology, Biology, and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering.

II. Research Fields

Arid land geography, arid land ecology, arid land hydrology and water resources, desertification control and ecological restoration, oasis ecology and agriculture, arid land biodiversity conservation, mineral resources and big data, remote sensing and GIS, as well as regional planning and sustainable development.

III. Positions and eligibility

1. Academic leader: Professor, Senior engineer

(1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree and be under 50 years old. They should also serve as professors or hold equivalent positions in prestigious research institutions, universities, R&D department in large enterprises, domestically and internationally.

(2) Applicants should demonstrate experience in leading and managing major research projects, coupled with research achievements acknowledged by peer experts.

(3) Applicants should possess innovative ideas for discipline development and scientific research, along with exceptional capacities in leading a team to sovle problems.

2. Researchers: Professor, Associate Professor; Senior engineer, engirneer

(1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree and be under 40 years old. They should also have more than three consecutive years of work experience or at least one postdoctoral experience in prestigious research institutions, universities, R&D department in large enterprises in China and abroad after obtaining the doctoral degree. Exceptions may be considered for individuals who have obtained a doctoral degree abroad and have demonstrated exceptional performance.

(2) Applicants should possess experience in leading research projects (with possible relaxation of this requirement for overseas returnees) and have achieved scientific or technological accomplishments recognized by peer experts.

(1) Research startup fund provided by XIEG;

(2) Have the autonomy to recruit postdocs, group members, and students;

(3) Assistance will be provided for children’s education and spouse's employment;

(4) Rent-free house during the transition period up to three years.

V. Talent Policy

Those eligiable for national-level, local-level and CAS-leval talent projects, XIEG will assist in the application process. Additionally, they will receive support from XIEG, including research startup funds, settling-in allowances, and assistance in building a research team.

Relevant policy support for talents:

1. Those granted with the National-level or CAS-level talent programs (Long-term or Outstanding): will be appointed as professor and supervisor for PhD students. They will receive research startup funds ranging from RMB 6 million to 16 million, along with settling-in allowances ranging from RMB 1 million to 2 million;

2. Those granted with the National-level or CAS-level talent programs (Youth Category): will be appointed as associate professor and supervisor for master students. They will receive research startup funds ranging from RMB 2 million to 8 million, along with settling-in allowances ranging from RMB 0.5 million to 1 million;
